Then, we add flocculants, which are long – chain polymers that help these clumps grow bigger. Once the clumps are large enough, they can be easily removed by sedimentation or filtration.
Ion Exchange
Ion exchange is a powerful method for removing dissolved silica. We use special ion – exchange resins. These resins are designed to exchange ions in the water. For silica removal, we use anion – exchange resins. The resin has negatively charged sites that can attract and hold the silica anions in the water.
When the water passes through the ion – exchange column filled with these resins, the silica ions replace other anions on the resin. Over time, the resin gets saturated with silica. We then regenerate the resin using a solution of sodium hydroxide. This process releases the silica from the resin and restores its ability to remove more silica from the water.
Reverse Osmosis
Reverse osmosis (RO) is another key process in our water purification systems. In RO, water is forced through a semi – permeable membrane at high pressure. The membrane has tiny pores that allow water molecules to pass through but block most dissolved solids, including silica.
RO is very effective at removing both dissolved and colloidal silica. However, it requires careful pre – treatment to prevent fouling of the membrane. If the pre – treatment isn’t done properly, silica and other particles can build up on the membrane, reducing its efficiency and lifespan.
Monitoring and Optimization
We don’t just set up the water purification system and forget about it. We constantly monitor the water quality. We use sensors to measure the silica levels in the water at different stages of the purification process. This helps us adjust the operation of the system in real – time.
For example, if the silica levels in the pre – treated water are higher than expected, we might increase the dosage of coagulants or adjust the filtration rate. If the ion – exchange resin is approaching saturation, we can plan for regeneration in advance.
